In the first of a series of regular posts, we’re going to feature one of our pet-friendly hotels, bed and breakfasts or guesthouses around the world. The first is the Stella Maris Hotel on Ireland’s Loop Head Peninsula in Co. Clare.
The Stella Maris Hotel
Built as a hotel back in 1880, this elegant Co. Clare hotel is open all year round and boasts a spectacular setting in the centre of Kilkee town. It overlooks one of the finest beaches in on Ireland’s west coast, making it a perfect place to spend a few days with a four-legged friend. This safe, sheltered sandy beach is protected by Duggerna Reef, which is a natural wonder itself with some large and small rock pools full of marine life which can easily be explored.
If you want to take it easier with your pet you can embark on the Loop Head Scenic Drive. This will take you to numerous scenic outlooks all the way to Loop Head Lighthouse, which is open to visit in summer. Dolphins, whales and seals appear regularly in and around Loop Head Peninsula. A variety of rare birds, like skuas, storm petrels and shearwaters can be seen flying past and attract birdwatchers from near and far.

The hotel’s guest policies are simple – guests are welcome to have their pet stay in the room with them overnight as long as they provide their own bedding. They’re also welcome to sit with the guests in the public/reception areas provided they are well behaved and not disturbing other guests. Since I’m sure you’re pet is the most well-behaved one in the land, they might even make some new friends of their own.
What makes this hotel perfect for pets is the fact that the proprietors themselves are dog-owners. Their two red setters have been enjoying their location on the Wild Atlantic Way for years now and are familiar faces in the hotel.
